more than just Sowjet-concreet

  13 votes
i visited Bratislava first weekend of april 2006. i didn't know well about former Sowjet countries, but i heard much. For example, all the buildings are anonymus concreet blocks. Not true!

cool views from there, but forgot the name of the village. very small

visiting a friend and has one year old daughter was my plan. i had 4 days and 4 nights to do the journey Brussels - Vienna by plane, Vienna - Bratislava by cough/bus and back. In between both journeys, there was a trip 2 hours north to the village where the mother of my friends daughter was born. back to middle ages, i thought. but what a very nice country Slovakia is, beautifull landscapes, old castells, mountains and plaines. i loved it! everything is still very cheap, so if you want to go back into nature, or speed through the plaines by train whithout much cash, i would recommend Slovakia. But not in wintertime i guess, i went first of april. apparently the snow just melted. And you don't want to be there when still snowing. The facilities are very limited, once out of the capital Bratislava.

Old centre Bratislava, nice architecture, bit like Vienna but more rustic and real. Every hill looking over the Donau valy. Awesome views! The countryside of Slovakia. Great open plaines, who give you an overwhelming impression of space. That openes even strikes you more while traveling by train. and every train has a diner space with bar. Great

What's really great:
really big play ground, but you can't really see, can you?

low prices.. nice sunshine while i was there.. not much car traffic, silence even in the capital but not dead, defenitly not! lots of young mums with buggies/prams. and playgrounds and parks all over the place. close to my idea of the ideal city!

Sights:
very clever made statue compositions all over old town.. like it or don't

as i said, try a train ride through the countryside
or take one of the many trams to cruise true town.
but always give away your seath to an elderly person.
you'll see, everyone does, so you don't want to be the rude foreigner not to stand for that granny.

Accommodations:
we played every night catch me if you can, on our hands and knees, she won every time!

i didn't spend a night in a hotel in Bratislave, stayed over with a friend. Sorry

Restaurants:
home made soup, nazdravjé

we had diner in 2 different restaurants, who offered great food for low prices. but i guess this is a general advantage of Slovakia, good stuff for low prices. So don't hazitate, you low budget traveler, you might even trie a fancier looking place, still go in, have a meal, and remain happy even after receiving the bill. it happened to me!
