Granada - Spain

  10 votes

Give me an alms, woman, because there is nothing so painful as being blind in Granada. says an inscription on the wall of the famous Alhambra. Granada is a city that has about everything. A lively typical Andalusian city centre, where the influence of the Mores' domination is still visible in many parts. Nearby is the Sierra Nevada, a famous ski resort and at about 75 km. is the Mediterrenean. Being a university city Granada has a lively night life as well. Jewel in the crown of Granada is the Alhambra, but there is also the Generalife, the Albaicin, Granada's oldest quarter (see below)

Favourite spots:
The Alhambra. The name comes from Al Qal'a al-Hambra, the red castle. The Alhambra is the only remaining Mores' monument, built on a hill overlooking the city. It is a masterpiece of architecture. Being built as the residence of an oriental monarch and his harem, it provokes the sensation of the magic 1001 nights. A bit outside the actual Alhambra, but officially forming part of it, is the Generalife, the sultan's summer palace, famous for its breathtaking gardens. The name originates from the arab Gennat-Alarif, the architect's garden. Opening hours may vary and the time to visit is limited, so before you go inform yourself. The Albaicin is Granada's oldest quarter, with streets so narrow, two persons will have trouble passing each other. This was the Mores' refuge when the Christians recaptured the city.

What's really great:
The typical Andalusian atmosphere of the city and the easy going Granadños. For the womanisers Andalucia has the most beautiful women in the world!

Accommodations:
Camping sites are outside the city.
Granada has hotels of all kinds of classes. A wonderful hotel, right in the city centre is Hotel Victoria, that was being renovated the last time I was in Granada.
In the city centre there are also a lot of cheap pensiones and hostales.

Hangouts:
Everywhere in the city centre. A bit off the centre is a very special place. Until about midnight it's a cinema, thereafter a disco. This is the only cinema I've ever been where you sit on sofas, are allowed to smoke and can order drinks from the bar.

Restaurants:
Los Manueles. But there are many more. And don't forget about the typical Spanish tapas bars.

Other recommendations:
The Sierra Nevada, famous ski resort and one of the highest mountains on the Spanish continent.
