Bamako, Mali's capital, is a large city, actually amongst the fastest growing in the world, with a population now exceeding 1.6 million. The fast growth of the population has not been matched by the growth in the infrastructure. This leaves the capital simply overcrowded. The dust in the streets is really bothering and traffic can be impossible. The city is not rich in remarkable sights. It is getting more modern and historically it is not terribly fascinating. New conference centres and African Union-related structures have been recently appearing. Bamako is well connected with other West African capitals, also by railway with the Senegalese Dakar.
