Segou, a picturesque town about 230 kilometres east from Mali's capital, is located at the Niger River. It is home to 95,000 people, great examples of colonial architecture and old Sahel mosques and the Koran schools. Its riverfront promenade is great for watching superb sunsets and people fishing, moving around, doing dishes. Segou is a green town, lush with tall trees. Its market is colourful, lively and rich in smells.
There are numerous accommodation options, which vary in quality and value for money. There are a few good eateries around and a myriad of local guides, who are prepared to take tourist around the country, as far as Timbuktu.
