Haarlem is famous for its hofjes or almshouses which used to provide subsidized housing for the poor and elderly. The houses were small and built around a courtyard with beautiful flower gardens. Hofjes are entered through a front door that was locked at night. These days many 'hofjes' have been renovated and are very popular places to live.
