The Nieuwe Kerk, or New Church, is not really new as it was built in 14th century. But not much of theoriginal structure is left as a fire and an explosion at the arsenal next door destroyed large parts in days gone by. The latest addition was in 1872 when architect P.J.H. Cuypers added the 100m (320ft) tower to the gothic facade. It is the second-highest tower in the Netherlands and can be climbed. (stairs only). The burial vaults of the Dutch Royal family are in the crypt. The main reason for a visit is to see the mausoleum of William of Orange. It is flanked by his faithful dog who is said to have died only one day after the great man. The richly decorated tomb is carved from black and white marble and gilded heavily.
