Many first time visitors to Delhi just see the City as a seething mass of chaotic madness and plenty don't give it a fair chance. This is really unfortunate because if you are willing to jump in headfirst you will appreciate that Delhi is truly amazing.
New Delhi has great character it is spread out and modern. When in New Delhi it is great to spend a leisurely few days walking around exploring the main sites. It's also great to bargain with a rickshaw Driver to drive you around the city for a few hours and just sit back and watch as everyday Delhi life wizzes by - you can never grow tired of it. Old Delhi is entirely different. Spend hours wandering through the tiny alleyways and bazzars soaking up the layers of history. I guarantee that I have left out a million other places to see so I have two recommendations for you - (1) Go and explore the city and fall in love with Delhi for yourself and (2) Please take a diary of all your adventures so that a few months down the track you are not sitting here like me trying to remember all those fantastic places you went to!!
Favourite spots:
New Delhi: Connaught Place (CP) is the main business/shopping/ tourist hub where you can find everything you need. Lodhi gardens are great to relax in on a hot dusty day. Humayans tomb is impressive and very interesting. To get away from the city chaos head out to the Rajpath area where you find the Presidents house and the parliament buildings. It is set out in a huge opened landscaped area of calm. Old Delhi: In Old Delhi you must go to the impressive Jama Masjid mosque. I think it is the largest Mosque in India. I also recommend the Red Fort. The Ghandi Memorial is also very interesting. And you can't miss the Chandni Chowk Bazzar.
What's really great:
I think the most special part about Delhi is when you get to meet some of the 14 or so million individuals that make the city so great. They each have a smile for you, a story to tell, some have a rupee or two to make from you and many are destined to be your instant friends for life! The converstaions you have are priceless! (If you like cricket you'll be in your element). Oh and I can't forget to mention the food! Ah, India. A vegetarians paradise! The huge amount of food I consumed bordered on the ridiculous! And the indian sweets - gulab jamun, rasugulla, barfi, jalebis... the list goes on and the level of deliciousness is indescribable!
Accommodations:
I stayed in the Karol Bagh area of New Delhi which was fine. There are a few budget hotels and also markets to wander through. It's in close proximity to Connaught Place.

Recommendations: Shed those Western Hangups with stress, personal space, sanitization, time obsession and organization. Chill out, have a laugh, make new friends and experience Delhi for exactly what it is - Amazing!
