Anguilla - Truly Paradise

Sandy Ground Village travelogue picture
Anguilla is an island paradise - perfect weather, great food, wonderful people, and thus far uncrowded. A tiny island, it has 30+ absolutely beautiful beaches - many of which we had totally to ourselves.

Favourite spots:

Since we go to the Caribbean mostly for the snorkeling, I would have to say my two favorite spots are the reef off Prickley Pear and Sandy Hill Bay. Little Bay is a very close third.

What's really great:

The lack of crowds was the best thing about Anguilla. That coupled with the fact that it is not a commercialized island - no touristy shopping areas make it very special indeed. And the food - oh my gosh the food!

Sights:

Snorkeling just about anywhere around the island. The best shore snorkeling (in my opinion) is at Sandy Hill Bay. I saw my first turtle there. You can catch a ride to Little Bay for $10 round trip and get in some pretty good snorkeling there. I saw my first barracuda there. (No pictures of either unfortunately). And, if you can, hire Thomas Peabody of Sandy Deep to take you to do a drift snorkel at the reef off Prickley Pear.

Accommodations:

18 Degrees North Villa. This a WONDERFUL villa with all the comforts of home plus some! The best feature (in my opinion) is the gorgeous disappearing edge swimming pool overlooking St. Martin with the huge terrace (partly covered, partly not) surrounding it.

Restaurants:

There are so many good restaurants to choose from! Tasty's is locally owned by chef Dale Carty and is awesome for breakfast, lunch or dinner. My favorite breakfast is his veggie omelet and hash browns. For lunch the jerk chicken salad is quite tasty.
Barrel Stay has delicious steaks.
Corner Bar Pizza is just awesome and very reasonably priced.
Pumphouse has delicious burritos and burgers and has live music I think Wed through Sat.
Serenity is in the most beautiful setting and their shrimp scampi is quite rich and very good.
Ripples has a grilled snapper that can't be beat.
Avoid Roys.
