Varanasi has been the ultimate pilgramage spot for Hindus for many centuries and is the oldest continously inhabitat city in the world.
Mark Twain said "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together".
The Ganga or aka Ganges in Varanasi is believed to have the power to wash away the sins and hence on a daily basis at sunrise devotees come in their thousands to bath in the waters.
