On our second trip to Australia we spent a couple of days in Cairns again. Since we've been here before, we already knew the basics about this town... Backpackers, Beer, Diving and having lots of fun in the neighbourhood. The centre near the harbour is the place to go after returning from a divetrip or day at the beach.

There is just one spot you really need to have seen: GBR the Great Barrier Reef. When you visit Queensland go find some nice small townships for diving... if that fails go to Cairns. This is the diving centre for the Great Barrier Reef.

Did I mention Diving? This is the one thing you MUST do as long as you are planning to come over here any way. Oh... and consider having a Certificate. it gives you much more freedom under water.
(I will add my underwater stories as soon as there is a way to classify my dive pics.)
The other thing you can do in and around Cairns is hiring a 4wd and going on a 3 day journey to Cooktown. This will show you some different features of Queensland all in a day's drive of Cairns.
There is the outback, dry and rough, the last few pockets of tropical rainforrests in Australia, and much more.

Poinsetia, a small motel within walkingdistance of the centre.
|

| Nightlife: |
Johnno's ... if it still exists. The co-owner still plays the blues every night after a life long LSD and drinking problem. Be quick to visit this place. Last time I heard the blues here Johnno was not doing so well.
