Fes is Morocco's gem. Its vast medina, comprising over 9000 alleys and streets, is the largest and most complex in Africa, and had little changed since the Middle Ages. It is listed by UNESCO as the World Cultural Heritage Site. The atmosphere and the animation inside the medina are hard to describe. Little shops, bazars, hotels, mosques, medresas, workshops, bars, tearooms and simple households have worked in harmony for centuries. The donkeys fully loaded with cargo still traverse the maze of the dark alleys. Fes boasts great city gates, too and a magnificent leather colouring workshops, which also had not changed their practice for hundreds of years. The modern city of Fes is also pleasant and offers great accommodation options, including very civilised and safe campsite. For independent shopping there is Macro Cash & Cary, which accepts foreign passports in place of the membership card. [edit text][editors]
