Marrakech travel tips

Bougainvillea
I'm afraid I couldn't tell you how I got there in the Souqs. I was lost but suddenly saw this cafe restaurant in sharp pink color. Inside was tastefully decorated and of course quite pink too. They serve pizzas, sandwiches and a rich variety of beverages. The pizzas were great and you could see how they prepared them. A good place to chill out after a long walk in the Souqs or if getting quite enough of tajine and couscous ;-). more

Minbar at the Badii Palace
If you visit the Badii Palace [entry 10 dirhams - about €1] you can pay the same again to go into one perticular pavilion. Inside, photography is banned [rightly but it hurts!] There is one exhibit and posters about its function, history and restoration. It is the 12th century minbar from the magical Koutoubia Mosque. The website daesribes it as a 'preaching chair' but, for non-Muslims like me, its more like a set of wide wooden steps leading up to a pulpit [ without the actual pulpit.] It was used, as I understand, like a pulpit but the preacher only went part way up and preached from there, bowing to the Prophet. I am about as religious as a polecat but this is immensely moving and the cedarwood ornamentation is magnificent. more

Sahara Expeditions
I only used it for a day trip to the Ourika Valley, which was very good. The scheduled stops were at interesting places, a Berber house and a women's co-operative selling argan oil. Make sure you know what you are paying for - guides and meals are not included in the price. They also run two or three day expeditions from Marrakech. more

Riad Arahanta
This is small as riads go, two master bedrooms, two singles, a delightful salon and a kitchen spread around a lovely courtyard. It's less than a quarter of an hour to the main square, although you might have problems except that they take you for an orientation walk - after which, getting back is easy. Ross and David, the Scottish owners and Hamid, their manager, can't do too much to make you feel welcome and it only takes a shout to bring one of them looking down from their first floor quarters. There is also a fine roof terrace. Master rooms are en suite whereas the single rooms share a shower room.Breakfasts are plentiful and excellent. [The phone number given here differs from the website because the code was changed. I have used both it and the email address that I have given.] more
