Travel guide to Volubilis
Volubilis - its massive arch
Volubilis - its massive arch
Volubilis was an ancient Roman city, now an archaeological site in Morocco, inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1997. Volubilis was a large and important city built in the 3rd century BC on a site previously built in the neolithic period and by the Carthaginians. It was a capital of the province called Mauritania Tingitana, and gained importance for its export of olive oil and grain, which went all the way to Rome. There is evidence that Volubilis was also home to Jewish people, who cohabited the city with the ancient Romans.

One of the site's main attractions are floor mosaics, which decorated households of the well situated Romans. Their state of preservation is phenomenal.

Volubilis is situated between Fes and Meknes, and the closest town is Moulay Idriss, Morocco's holiest place. [edit text]  [editors]
