Shanghai feeling

Shanghai was the second stop on our itinerary we arrived by hard sleeper train from beijing. Train journeys in China are really very intersting and funny. In a hardsleeper you have 6 people per compartment each a bed makes 3 per side.

Shanghai is a nice city with great differences. You have the old Chinese Town, The Colonialistic bund, The modern Pudong with scyscrapers. When we arrived at the railway station we took taxis to our hotel (najing) which is situated near the pedestrian shopping area. From there we took a stroll down to the bund and took the subterrean crossing by train to pudong. When in Pudong go up to the 87th floor of the Grand Hyatt and enjoy the view from up there. Another nice thing to do is a river cruise where you see all different types of ships, shipyards and bridges. You also have a nice view to the Bund.

We made the best desicion to rise early next morning and went to the chinese town by 6 o'clock. There were loads of people doing their morning exercises, dancing, walking their birds, buying breakfast from flying vendors. It was impressing to watch all those elderly people peforming their thai chi, some even had swords, fans or ribbons. Some people where showing off the skills of their birds. We watched a man trying to make its birs say hello (ni Hao), after some teaching it really answered. There was forming a crowd around him. Then we went to the teahouse in the lake, which was a bit tricky to find. Eventually we walked over the nine dragon bridge and went inside the teahouse where we had steaming hot, delicious green tea (lü tsha). There were some old mans sitting there having their regular morning tea and talks. They seemed to tell jokes or were perhaps laughing at us. The ambiance was really relaxed and everybody was very friendly. Afterwards we went to the chinese garden.

We were among the firsts to enter this day and could enjoy it calmly. When we got out there was already quite a lot of people around. By then it would have taken us 5 minutes instead of 1 crossing the nine dragon bridge. We also were lucky to get some sun just before the smog was closing in. So when staying in Shanghai get up early. Another funny experience was taking the metro. An empty train arrived and seconds after the doors opened it was crammed with people. We tried to get out on the next stop and could only manage it with boxing our way through the people.

near the pedestrian shopping area of shanghai. From there you are a short footwalkt to all the main attractions or you can take the metro.
If you are after something more luxurious check out the grand hayatt on pudong which claims to be the highest Hotel of the world
