Since 1962 Kampala is the capital of Uganda. 1891 it was built on seven hills north of Lake Victoria. Today there are many more hills to find. The name Kampala refers to Kasozi K'Empala which means Hills of Antelopes.

Today Kampala is a modern, bustling capital that has overcome the terrible impact of war. Therefore it is the capital of the most rapidly developing countries in Africa. The electricity works, clean water comes out of taps, damaged buildings are now renovated and new ones are built everyday. Don't miss out to check shopping malls or watch a movie in a cineplex. The bottom half is a completely different world, composed of shops, small businesses, budget hotels, cheap restaurants, street markets, Hindu temples, and the bus station and taxi parks. The streets in this congested area overflow with people, battered old cars, lottery ticket sellers and pavement stalls offering everything from rubber stamps to radio repairs. Kampala city offers you a wide range of classy hotels. Of course it depends on you whether you prefer a highclass hotel like Sheraton or The Grand Imperial Hotel and several other high-class hotels or a lodge or hostel which is not too costy.

My favourite spots are Half London, a nice place with a fun fair and lot's of nice restaurants where you can eat grilled Tilapia and other seafood. There are also nice bars, where you can listen to live Jazz-Music. Staying around the beach is lot's of fun, you can go swimming, enjoying meals on the shore and have a good time.

Ugandan market - a place to meet

I think the hospitality of Ugandans make this place a real place wanting to spend your holidays. You don't really have the feeling that people are already too exploited by the tourism industry. So people offer you a real friendliness instead of one only shown because of touristic reasons. The food is great as it is so varied. Fresh fruits, delicious dishes, no matter if meet or fish, vegetables or mushrooms, there is alot to explore and to enjoy.

| Sights: |
There is alot to see, start with the National Theatre as there is a handicraft market around. They offer nice handmade crafts, pictures, chains etc.
Kasubi Tombs are a spot you cannot miss. It's the place where the former kings are buried and a very traditional place.
Rubaga church gives you the possibility to enjoy a stunning view from one hill over whole Kampala.

| Accommodations: |
Accomodation depends on what kind of holiday you would like to have. There are possibilities from very very cheap, like for backpackers, reasonable tourist hotels, nice lodges or real excellent but expensive first-class hotels.
Me personally, I stayed in Fair View which is more like a ressort, very big, but not impersonal. It's just a bit more private compared to a huge hotel like Sheraton or Grand Imperial.
I nice hotel, especially for business people, is Africana. But the city of Kampala is full of 5-star-hotels like Nile, Grand Imperial, Sheraton, etc.

| Nightlife: |
I love Ange Noir, a very nice club, VIP-lounge, restaurant, dancing. They play international hip-hop music as well as Ugandan music, which is really good music as it is also varied, ranging from hip-hop to traditional music. You'll definitely have to shake your leg.
Club Silk is also a cool club with great music and cool people.
Half London offers many spots with music, drinks and good food. One example is Al's Bar.

| Restaurants: |
For food I can recommend Ekitobeero which is near Fair View hotel. They offer Ugandan food, with lot's of different dishes. Don't miss fresh passionfruit-juice, one thing I really miss here.
African Village is also a great place to explore Ugandan food. They always offer buffet dishes, so you can try what you want and as much as you want.
But Kampala offers food for any taste. You can find fast food restaurants as well as very small and local restaurants with grilled meat or fish.

One thing is sure, you can never get bored in Kampala or in Uganda generally. There are so many possibilities to entertain yourself, you'll have holidays you'll never forget!
