Rome - Fall of 2003

Rome travelogue picture
We visited Rome in October of 2003. During the last two years we took vacations through Tuscany, Liguria, and Venize and decided to try the Eternal City this time. What a great choice. We both recommend Rome very very highly. The history is mindboggling, the food was awesome, the locals very friendly, and the city was very easy to navigate by foot or the bus system.

Favourite spots:

The Colloseum and Forum ( I suggest you take advantage of one of the many guided tours otherwise you will have no real idea of what you are walking by). Pizza Navona, Campo di Fiori, Borghese Museum, Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel, and the Testervere area!

What's really great:

We loved staying in the Campo di Fiori area. It was very relaxing and as quiet or busy as you wanted to make it. We frequented a delightful wine bar (Enoteca) called Vini D'Angele just one block off the south east corner of the Campo. Massimmo the proprietor of the establishment delighted us with awesome choices of Barolo's and Amerone's when we asked him to make wine choices for us un subsequent evenings. Another great local spot is he Filetti di Baccalla who serve the local fare consisting of Cod Fillets - nothing fancy but real character and fun waiters - very inexpensive!

Sights:

St Peters,
The Vatican Museum,
The Borghese Museum,
Piazza Navona,
The Pantheon
The Spanish Steps (Overated)

Accommodations:

Albero del Sole al Biscione - Pay the premium for a rooftop room with a commanding view of the area.

Hangouts:

The Abbey Pub - Internet access and friendly Irish staff topping up the Guiness

The Drunken Ship - Younger and definitely Drunker than the Abbey

Sloppy Sam's - The name says it all

Restaurants:

Al Bric - a superb dining establishment several blocks west of the Campo di Fiori frequented by locals and tourists alike - The lamb was outstanding

Filleti di Baccala - Just east of Camp di Fiori - a local establishment serving battered Cod filets and an interesting salad with anchovy dressing -Not fany but cheap and authentic.
