Swakopmund is Namibia's second largest city. Don't expect a metropolis. It has fewer than 100.000 inhabitants.
This small coastal town will probably never develop into a big port as commerce, banking and trade don't play a big part.
This desert town is a photographer's dream come true, a showpiece of German colonial architecture. The buildings may be a bit run down, but the whole city reflects that it once was a German protectorate. There are German restaurants, a German konditorei and German is spoken widely (not only by the German visitors)
Weather conditions are harsh. When the cold sea water meets the hot desert air fog will form, which may or may not clear by noon.
The beaches are beautiful with soft sand but the ocean is very cold. If you are interested in adventure sports this is your place: Quadbiking, skydiving, dune surfing. If this is too adventurous, dolphin or bird watching may be to your liking. [edit text][editors]
