A very well taken shot Nicholas, can you explain to me the word Hibernal please?, Tony (jacko1)

nemox1 - Jan, 16 2010 07:01pm
Tony, is this better now?

horourke - Jan, 16 2010 09:01pm
I can explain hibernal = wintery from the Latin root which includes things like hibernation for the winter sleep of certain animals etc.
The so and so Romans when they reached Britain named my beloved native land Hibernia. Just imagine what a boon to one of our major money spinners; tourism, that would have been

Thank you both, I knew the sense of the word but it does not appear in the OED even as a derivation, very strange!

horourke - Jan, 17 2010 09:01am
Well indeed it is very interesting as the word crops up in the context of solstices, some epic fiction and in some bone science pursuits.
Perhaps the "correctness" of leather bound dictionaries is now threatened by the speed of etymological mutation.
Of further interest; the online dictionary of etymology does not refer to the adjective at all despite entries for hibernation and hibernia.
In any event the whole episode just goes to show that the British should never have allowed the likes of the Irish to learn your language only to later start inventing words for themselves. Then again I suppose that is just part of a very deep tolerance which is a major characteristic of your people

Hugh, although, like most English people I am prone to poke gentle fun at the Irish I am well aware of the major contributions that the Irish have made to other cultures spread across the world, including most of the New York police force:-).
