Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, is a small, lively town and famous for its cheese-market which started in 1365. In the centre you'll find the Cheese Museum. Also worth seeing is the Stedelijk Museum, which tells the history of town. In De Boom, the national beer museum, you can choose from 86 different Dutch beers. Don't forget to visit the Grote Sint Laurenskerk (15th/16th c.) and to go for a walk in the town so that you can see with all its beautiful old buildings at leisure. Shopping is good but food is better. [edit text][editors]
