Oslo travel tips

Norsk Folkemuseum
This is the very best of the museums on the Bygdoy peninsula, accessible from the city centre by boat or bus. It's an extensive area with rural buildings from all over Norway, including a stave church, and a 'town' with old shops and so on. more

Viking Ships Museum
The Viking Ships Museum forms part of the Cultural History Museum and displays three viking ships, initially used for burials in about the 8th century. I should rate it more highly if they had built a lift to the gallery level - like the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. Fine for the able bodied. more

Vigeland Museum and Park
I admit it. I've not been in the museum but the park is itself like a very grand Open Air Museum with [literally] hundreds of Vigeland sculptures, most in stone some some excellent bronzes over the bridge as you enter. However you get to oslo, you're almost certain to find yourself near the station. There's a transport info. office just outside who will give you a transport map. T-bahn + bus will be best for reaching the park. Top and left clicks respectively will give you info on the park and museum from the website - in English [or Norwegian, of course]. more

The Kon-Tiki Museum
I put this second only to the Folk Museum of those on the Bygdoy peninsula, reachable by bus or boat from the centre. It contains the raft Kon-Tiki. I understand that Heyerdal's theory of how people reached easter island is not that highly regarded now - but there's no doubt that htis raft conveyed some. The thought of one's entire being concentrated into a small area of balsa wood on a massive ocean is pretty exciting and moving. There are very gradual slopes in the museum, good for most disadvantaged people. Th Ra II is also displayed here. more

Anker Hostel
This is a very modern Hostel and it was the cheapest place to stay in Oslo 2004-12. It is not far from the city center. The employees are very nice. The rooms are ok/good. more

Thon Astoria
In a city like Oslo with prices as high as its snow drifts, the Thon Astoria offers good value for money. Itīs 5 minutes from the central railway station and bus terminal and handily placed for most everything the tourist or business traveller on a budget would want. Part of a chain, they can recommend other local sister hotels. As always, I recommend getting travel agant ID (www.sctravelteam.com) Itīs easy and inexpensive and it will pay for itself many times over. more

Nasjonalgalleriet
Tired of spending? This one is free! There are a large number of paintings from the National Romantic School that grabbed me much more than I'd anticipated. Open late Thursdays. more
