The islands of Lofoten must be some of the most spectacular in Europe if not in the world. Lying off the west coast of Norway, they are easy to reach - by Hurtigrute from Bodø or by car ferries. However Lofoten is approached - and there's an airport as well - the first thing seen is the so-called Lofoten Wall. This is a mountain chain that threads through all the largest islands of the group. On closer acquaintance some of them are more suited to climbers than walkers.
The mountains are not only high but contain some fabulous rock shapes such as the Svolvaer Goat above the capital.
Fishing villages abound along with much history of whaling.
If you consider staying, it is hard to beat renting a rorbu [plural rorbuer.] These were originally the accommodation used by fishermen during the season [although some replicas have been built for tourism.] [edit text][editors]
