Hi All,

Every now and again a 'member' signs up for Globosapiens and immediately starts sending messages trying to launder or extort money from Globies.

These letters are usually signed by 'barristers', 'doctors', 'lawyers', 'account managers', who act on their or others behalf claiming that there are some ridiculous amounts of money, going into millions of US dollars, significant portion of which could be yours if you help out with something. Some of the letters could sound rather real, emotional and touching, often citing personal tragedies of victims suffering from West Africa's present or past unrest. Countries involved are usually Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone.

These are criminal activities, and please do not fall for them. In the UK, we have a few programmes on TV exposing this crime. You will also find plenty of discussions on the internet. There is a net of Nigerian gangs that issues these letters. They operate from several countries, including the UK, where the 'trusted' contacts of the 'barristers' can 'assist' in completing the transactions.

We had one of the criminals on Globo today. I responded to his message appropriately, and let Andy know about it.

Not a happy note this one is, but I meant to protect all fellow Globies.

Kindest regards
Krys

Hello Everyone,
Thanks Krys for highlighting this.
Yes there are so many scams going on out there, that is why it is good to get a reminder about giving out personal information to anyone or anything that doesn't seem quite right.I like the T.V. ad that says "If something sounds too good to be true then it probably is" Take Care,
Fred.

Hello everybody,

thank you for the warning. This is really a problem on the net nowadays Loads of scam. GLOBO has spam protection systems active that filter out about 95% of such spamers and making it hard for them to send, resend messages and to sign up again once they have been deleted. The system also prevents new members from doing this right after registration - there has to be a 24h time delay. However as you noticed it is not possible to get a 100% and GLOBO needs your help on this! Usually such activity get's noticed by the system and I will receive a warning via e-mail. Mostly those members are using the first members in the list to start spamming. I guess this is the down side of fame and beeing on top of the lists.
Sorry about this. Looks like there is not much we can do from this point. Please report such spammers through the spam reporting function and they will be removed.

Kind regards,

Andy

Hello again :-)

I just wanted to add a warning. There are also people almost always from Cote D'oire that are adding friends to get a better reputation. For example this member:
http://www.globosapiens.net/arnaud

From the text she is writing I would say that she is to 100% a scamer, but wait... how come she made friendships with senior members? I did not delete this account so far, but I believe I have to. Please be cautious who you add as a friend. Use your reputation to help locating loyal members. Here is a text just fetched by the spam filter:

----

Dearest One.

My name is Miss Nathalie Arnaud 24 years old.I am into Modelling fashion designer and also i am studying accountancy. I am seeking a partner who desires to minister together, pray together, grow together and is emotionally and spiritually ready for that journey. Someone who is a fun loving person.

Hi Andreas,
Natalie Arnaud made a lot of friends today. Did you see the list? Strange. In my opinion her letter is quite straightforward.

I had to delete her account. She just tried to sent out spam to over 20 members. The GLOBO system did block most of them.

Regards, Andy

My junk box is filled with these letters from barristers representing someone who needs to get $80 million out of a London bank and needs me to be the only living relative, etc. Some of this spam even slips through into my main e-mail account. I'm glad Andy's got a firm grip on this here! There is enough schemers in the travel industry, we don't need to be bothered by this nonsense!
