I am just reeling from all the events of the last few days... all the changes in carry-on restrictions have rendered my carefully researched packing list obsolete overnight. I don't know how the folks in Great Britain have been coping with the extreme ban on carry-on items... no books? How is one to survive a transatlantic journey with nothing but Sky Mall to read! How is one to stay healthy and comfortable without nasal spray and lots of water? How can one document one's journey when expensive and fragile camera, computer and audio recording gear is at the mercy of the checked luggage handlers? I see that today things are finally lightening up a bit (oh, yea, I can bring my lipstick...whoopee) and we are likely in for more changes in the future (stricter or looser, who is to say?) but it does seem certain that the trend is definitely toward a more restrictive, less friendly travel experience. Any thoughts, anyone? Any stories from anyone who has had to deal with these changes first-hand? How are you coping?

First Morning travelled on short flight (one hour) without any carry -on bags. Stowed the lap-top in the hold - No damage.

Slept well on the flight. To-morrow will travel again. this time will try meditation. To improve is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often.

We might pray that the causes of terror be removed by each of us eliminating as far as possible any injustices over which we can exert any influence.

It's not quite as bad as you fear, Liz. i gather from one programme that once you have passed through, you can buy books or cosmetics, etc. The tight restriction is what you can take from outside past security.

However i am certainly bothered by the restrictions as far as photography is concerned and I hope you will get some good ideas here.

Has anyone heard any word on when some o the restrictions are going to lighten up? I have 23 hours of flights at the end of next week. Hugh, did what David said about being able to purchase books and magazines after security check points apply to your flight? If I have to go without my Ipod and my knitting, that would help;-)

I have a relative who is a flight attendent, and she told me that now there's a second search when boarding the plane to make sure that passengers don't bring on any beverages they may have purchased inside the terminal, even on the (supposedly) "secure" side.

The reports I've heard have varied according to location, and are changing from day to day... looks like in the UK they are now letting people take a carry-on bag that is about half the size of the old carry-on bag limit. But still no liquids or gels. Haven't heard about books or electronics in the UK. In the States, reading materials and electronics are ok to take on (last I heard), but will be subjected to a more thorough search procedure. And even though the equipment they use cannot detect explosives in your shoes, you must take them off and have them x-rayed. If you're flying anytime soon, it's best to check the offical government web sites for the latest information--better to be prepared, whatever the case.

Hey all, I'm sure by the time I go on my next venture in February things will have toned down abit however, I'm more concerned with checking my luggage.

I have NEVER checked my luggage when I'm travelling. My backpack is my life on the road! I'm always afraid it will get lost.. The only time I did check luggage is on the return trip from Haiti and I only put in that luggage things I knew I could go without and they DID lose that luggage! It went to Toronto, while I went to Montreal.

I wonder what would happen if you check your luggage, they lose it, then you have nothing to fall back on!! can't even brush your teeth!!

What about papers? wallets, purses etc. are these allowed? Is it true you have to put everything in clear plastic bags? no handbags?
