Hi GLOBies

Lately there was some discussion wether pictures were uploaded for the right place or not.

We do have a huge database which covers so many places that the correct places could easily be found.

Is it a matter of neglect of the poster that he/she uploads it for another place?

Is it that the poster doesn't know where the picture was taken exactly?

For some pictures however, I do feel that posting them under another place it can be better.

If we look at how information is found here on GLOBO it can make sense to upload content for a well know place wich is nearby. Like that the information will be more easily found. And when somebody searches a place he will get content that is nearby.

Nearby however is very relative. In Switzerland nearby is about 10 Km, In Australia nearby can be 200 km or more.

Another soultion for this dilemma would be a search function which would also bring results of places that are nearby. I don't know wether this would be doable with the present database.

If you log into viamichelin for instance you can find information according do maps or city searches and get stuff that is nearby too.

Just some thoughts

Martin

Martin, I agree "nearby" is relative but would you upload pictures like Niagara Falls to Toronto? Stonehenge to London? Füssen to Munich? The Matterhorn to Zurich? The Kruger Park to Johannesburg? The Great Wall of China to Beijing? A lot of members do this, I think it is lazy, confusing, irresponsible and even miss-informing travellers, unless properly placed or at least a note as to the proximity of the place to others.

We discussed the options for Greater London a while ago and a similar problem arises for other cities like Beijing. I see that Beijing is huge at 16808 km², but it is also one of the four municipalities in China so large that it equivalent to a PROVINCE in the administrative structure. It is thus also splitted up in the GLOBOdatabank into satellite cities and sub-urban areas, just like Greater London. There are at least 22 current alternatives for Beijing pics at GLOBO, perhaps many more considering National Parks, Mountains, Parks etc too?

The Great Wall crosses 6 provinces, the GLOBOdatabank offers; Juyongguan and Badalingzhen, (Mutianyu, Simatai, Jinshanling, Jiankou should be added) in the Beijing Area as visitor sites. Why is the best Beijing picture currentty of the Wall and not the city itself? Thats just like the Füssen Castle as Munich‘s current best picture at GLOBO – rediculous, confusing and chases REAL travellers away, GLOBO is becomming ever more an "amatuer" place?

Other alternatives for „greater“ Beijing in the GLOBOdatabank are:

Ming Dynasty Tombs - see Changping. For Peking Man (UNESCO Heritage Site) use Zhoukoudian / Zhoukoudianzhen. Other cities outside the Beijing urban area available at GLOBO are Shidu, Huairou, Miyun, Liangxiang, Liulimiao, Tongzhou, Yizhuang, Pinggu, Huairou, Miyun, and Yanqing. Other Beijing suburban areas like Mentougou, Fangshan, Tongzhou, Shunyi, Changping, Daxing are also listed at GLOBO.

There is nothing wrong with an occassional picture being misplaced, but WHOLE series of pictures?

Does this presume that members know the boundaries; where one county/city/town etc ends and another begins. The classic example you quoted was Beijing, when I went there and I booked a tour I was told that that the part of the wall I was visiting was in Beijing. Now when I uploaded pictures I just assumed it was Beijing and it did even occur to me that there was a different. It was after the fact I found out that I actually went to Badaling.

I just done a quick search in globo and found that only 1 member has correctly published a report in Badalingzhen; and that was Veronica - vbx000 and she lived there.

Many times I will search for various spellings, and names before I can upload a pitcure etc So it can be hit and miss.

So my take is we should try to be accurate, but you also have to remember if someone is externally looking for some assistance they are more likely to search under Beijing than Badaling.

Just a thought

Amanda, thanks for a reply.

I ask myself two questions:

Should travellers not always know where they are (or were) exactly? Tourist don't, they are excused :- )

What will our GLOBOgallery look like in 10 years if members post pics blindly to the nearest big city?

I think staff have some development work to do here;

1) keep the place-databank updated quickly when places are "suggested"!

2) build in an internal search engine, I can't find much about "Great Wall of China" using the current GLOBO search field, I would never have imagined it was in the city of Beijing, the GLOBOplace means the inner city, most members confused!

Another factor is that China is only now opening up and a lot of the names are unknown to us. In a few years names (also around Beijing) will become more known to us, just like Manhattan, Bronx, Long Island, or even Buffalo to New York or like the many boroughs (defined in the GLOBOdatabank) near the City of London.
