When I was in Texas two weeks ago I wished to experience an exiting storm or hurricane just once in my life. I now feel bad and could never wish that for anyone anywhere!

The news from Louisiana and Missippi states in the USA, specially New Orleans just keeps on getting worse; 1 million people displaced, hundreds dead and billions in damage. Now they report that some of the city will forever be under water and never be reclaimed! I think global warming is going to show quite some more horrors in the future!

I visited beautiful 'Orleans a few years ago and will never forget it, see GLOBO pictures and reports by various members. My prayers and hope for a good new future for all effected citizens.

We had 15 members in New Orleans,

have: 44 members in the state of Louisiana

25 members in the state of Mississippi

Update Day 3:

- more than a thousand feared dead

- 5 mil. without electricity and fresh water

- over $30 billion damage

- 100 miles of coast destroyed

Update Day 6:

- thousands still to be rescued

- damage estimated more than $100 billion

- marshall law exists

Update Day 10:

- death toll rises above 1000

- first deaths due to waterbourne desease

- many still refuse to leave the area

- some oil platforms still not found

- more hurricanes forecasted!

This post by Rangutan brings the true horror of people overcome by storms into very clear focus.

This awful storm is in the news and the people's tragic losses are everyday on our television screens.

Every day in many remote and beautiful parts of our world other weather disasters (even sometimes failure of the rain to fall) claim some human lives.

As a community interested in travel and the preservation of remote attractive locations, is there some way in which we can help?

Hugh

Thank you Hugh

Why I posted this? Because as travellers we might know people there, might have been there or been in a similar situation, some of us might experience the same horror and need for help one day in trhe future!

How does this effect us?

The price of petroleum has jumped 5-8% higher these weeks, the Gulf platforms being damaged and the USA using its reserves. An increase in the price of jet fuel and air-travel will automaticaly rise. A pity!

How we can help now? Solidarity is love and the best help. Travellers always care for each other, help where possible! Finance not needed for the USA but hope the goverment reacts quickly to allocate help and relocate/support the victims. Prayer helps too...

All I can say is thank God I took my mom to see the southern states (Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana back in April/May of this year)

It was the first time my ever travelled anywhere. My mom has Post-Polio and I thought this trip would give her the chance to see all that she wanted too before she becomes confined to a wheel chair. She is a big "southern" fan of the civil war,Elvis, antebellum houses, New Orleans etc.... In the beginning of planning the trip I wasn't too thrilled about it, cause mmmm hey, it's the US and coming from Canada it's not a big deal for me.(I would prefer to travel the USA/Canada in my winnebago when I'm in my golden years!!)

But now, I'm glad that I went and that my mom forced me to see some great history of the area and I'm glad that she had the chance to see them all in their glory.. It's sad though, to know that alot of the places were destroyed, Grand Isle--Gone(We went there to see the Ocean, picniced on the beach), especially the Antebellum houses that were so intricate in detail in and around New Orleans.

Oh well, C'est la vie, that's life!

I now understand the flooding. See

...the city lies up to 10 feet below the river and lake levels!

That slide show from the Hurrican is amazing.

Many of these families have not only lost everything but have been forced to move thousands of miles away because neighboring communities can't absorb all of them. Our city in San Jose California has taken in 150 families, many of whom no longer intend to go back, ever. San Francisco has taken in 200 families and many more cities have done the same. My husband has several of these children as students and it is heartwarming to see how they have been accepted into the community. All the same, these families have been separated from relatives and everything they have ever know. The extent of their loss is hard to comprehend. These families have been amazingly resilient!
