Letter send to a member of Globo:

Many thanks for your comments, I am agree with: you a

> picture should be rated with what it represents, not the quality too much, I am not a professional photographer! My camera, is not the most sophisticated either!

Sadly some members which I won't nametend to rate only photos on quality rather than the meaning of the photo, oh well!

I try to upload photos representing something in the local culture, the way of life of locals,or showing nice places of the country I visit. Some of my photos might not be the best quality but so what, most of them means something in a traveller's mind.

And yes, "familly albums" should not figures on this site! I want other Globo users to share my travelling experience as much as I want to shares theirs, thanks to Globo, I saw places wich I have never even heard before, I have learn a lot!

I love your photos, they truly shows the culture and way of life of the place. They are relevant to travel.

Take care

Isabelle

I agree. To get 5* I think a photo should have excellent quality and be travel related [in a fairly broad sense.] For 4*, which I regard as a considerable commendation, I take all sorts of factors into account. I do recognise, though, that I might then grade some such as yours a bit more favourably because i was there when you were taking them and I usually know what you are trying to show - but so what? If enough people grade them, this sort of thing will cancel out.

I think we should all be concerned to keep the fun in Globo!

Cheers

David

Maybe when some people grade according to the quality, it means it's time to buy a new camera. It makes sense to rate based on the traveller's mind to get an idea of the place.

Hi Isabelle

I know that when you throw a stone into a flock of sheep it's always the one that has been hit that bleats :-)

In this sense I feel hitten by your stone about rating according to quality rather than meaning.

For the 5Th star, I have to agree with david. A 5 star picture needs to be nearly perfect in every way. For all other votes between 2 and 4 I really am interested in the meaning of the picture. But when a picture really is not discernible because it's quality is so low I tend to distract one or two stars due to this fact.

I believe that when somebody visits GLOBOsapiens and searches pictures of a certain country he would like to see the true gems first. If we have pictures of a poor quality with 5 stars too, they might think: well if this is the quality they like to show here, I don't bother going on browsing, because anything below 4 must be horrible...

Only quality will attract more quality!

These are just my personal views!

Have a great day

well i agree with Isa ,that many people just rate on the quality of picture, but i think even the naming of pictures plays a important role, some pictures are so nicely named that one tends to see thepicture and then rate .

in general its people will as how they rate coz there is no hard and fast rules for rating ,just one thing should be kept in mind that ..PLEASE DONT UNDER RATE SO THAT PEOPLE ARE DISCOURAGED.

I don't feel strongly enough about it to merit a new thread and it does relate to the feeling behind this one.

I wonder if the 'let's pretend to be professionals' angle is creeping into comments as well. I say and I mean that I do welcome tips on technical matters from Martin, Rudi, Marianne and others. However, you don't have to be a photographer to know what pleases you and what you like less in a photo - and people who submit photos might like to know how they seem to those who NEVER claim to be photographers - I know I do appreciate such comments - I repeat AS WELL .

So I don't actually rejoice about being advised to take a basic photographic course in a comment on somebody else's photo - interesting as I might find it.

Hi folks

I just found an interesting article about commenting on pictures:

http://www.buxtehuder-fotofreunde.de/Kurt/kurt10.htm

It's in German ;-) (I guess there are some among us that can understand this)

Have a great day

Martin,

that link is so funny. It mentions "International Guidelines for Photo Comments" which I at first can’t find on the web but I came across these other interesting basic rules:

http://www.outdoorphoto.co.za/crit.php (slow)

http://photoinf.com/

http://www.photocritique.net/rules.html

http://www.photosig.com/go/main/help?name=faq/faq.011

http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=139941&page=3

The above mention how important politeness is but also how important it is to be honest - being only friendly does not help anyone, being too critical always spoils the atmosphere, there are positive words to describe mediocre work like "nice", "wow", "different".... Also when uploading a picture with an obvious fault, intentions around taking the photo should be described and a note of self-critique helps tune down critic from others. Another very important rule (which I have broken in the past) is not to argue the validity of another viewer’s critique!

We are so diverse, various levels of photograhic skills/equipment, various ages, cultures and levels of english. Perhaps someone could put together some basic tips for commenting in a F.A.Q at GLOBO one day?

Hi everybody,

what an interesting discussion. I agree with with mortimer, a 5 star picture does have to be really excellent. However rating a picture one or two star which is an really OK picture draws an excellent "picture" of the rater itself. I mean considering rating reports. If a report is an average of 4, rating them with one, and continuing to rate others straight behind it with one star makes me believe that there is something wrong. This is why such types of ratings show up inside teh administration area as possible fraud. Since that tool came to live, I believe that fraud is a relict of the past at GLOBO for most cases.

Considering the comments, I think it is not appropriate at tell a member to get a better gear. Here again, the photo quality itself is of course important, but not as important as the things you do see on that picture. For perfect photographs there are other communities out there. GLOBO = travel and that for I believe the comments you write should be related to what you do see on that picture regarding to travel and not if the picture was inside the light, or if the uploader could not wait till the other person gets out of the picture. Such comments might be OK for members who you know are taking pictures with the idea in mind to upload later to GLOBO or any other site before they go on that trip. But if they are already back, the picture is taken and the he can't just go back and take it again. The moment is gone.

The fun should always be on top of that, GLOBO is for many people a hobby and a hobby should always be fun!

This are just my 2 cents on that topic.

Best regards,

Andy
