Colca Canyon, located in the southern Peru, is the canyon of the Colca River. It has been considered as the deepest canyon in the world, twice as deep than the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. It's position as the Earth's deepest canyon is contested by the Cotahuasi Canyon, nearby. Colca Canyon boasts a relatively prosperous population of the Andean Condor, which has been on a verge of extinction. The Cruz del Condor, located at the ridge of the canyon, which plummets 1,200 to the bottom, is probably the only spot on Earth, which is easily accessible and guarantees sighting of this magnificent bird.

The canyon is on the itineraries of almost every travel agent in Arequipa, some 160km south. There is regular public transport as well and the road passes through the planet's most spectacular scenery or volcanoes and snowcapped Andes. [edit text] [editors]
