However, internationally recognised as Machu Picchu, which in the Indian Quechua language means Old Mountain, is a pre-Columbian Inca site built in the mountains at 2,400 meters above the sea. It was built in approximately 1450 but then mysteriously abandoned. It laid peacefully until 1911 when Hiram Bingham discovered it again. It is Peru's most recognised site and amongst the most the most recognised in the world. UNESCO listed the site in 1983 and recently added to the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Machu Picchu itself is not that unusual or attractive, it is a collection of ruined houses, but its location is phenomenal. The mountains in which Incas built their town are not easily accessible.
To get to Machu Picchu, one can take a train from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes and then walk up the mountain or take a bus or taxi. Machu Picchu is also the final stop at the famous Inca Trail, which also begins in Cuzco. [edit text][editors]
