Travel guide to Sillustani
Peru - Sillustani Village
Peru - Sillustani Village
Sillustani is a small village beyond Puno, near Lake Titicaca. It lays near the pre-Incan burial ground. The tombs, called chullpas, were built in a form of stone towers by the Colla, whom Incas invaded in the 15th century. It is presumed that they are also connected to the Aymara culture, who mummified their deceased in sitting or fetal position. Some of the tombs have lizards carved into them, potentially indicating that since the lizards could re-grow their tails, the people were entering the other form of life, as well.

There is a magnetic stone at the burial ground, which makes the compass spin like crazy. To indicate the fact that it is a magnetic stone has been carved into a stone in a form of spiral.

A few families in Sillustani village welcome tourists to try their cooking and visit their household. They make a few souvenirs hoping to sell them to the visitors. They are friendly and to see their way of living is hugely interesting. [edit text]  [editors]
