Taquile is one of the natural islands on Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake that forms part of the boundary between Peru and Bolivia. It is usually visited either by a day's boat trip from Puno on the mainland or combined with the artificial Uros islands and an overnight stay on Amantani.
It is no longer necessary to get to the top of the island by the fearsome steps left by the Incas although htis is still the way down, the boats moving from the landing point to retrieve their passengers at the bottom of the steps.
The route to the top of the islad is less steep but, of course, longer and very winding.
Apart from its superlative views, the island has much human interest. The marital status and the role in the community of both men and woman can be gathered from their attire, in particular headwear.
In the centre of the island is a cooperative where the local inhabitants sell hteir handicrafts and wonderfully knitted woolly items. [edit text]  [editors]
