Lipa became a city and major trading post for coffee when plantations in America suffered desease back in history. Before even that it was rebuilt after the Taal volcano destroyed it in the mid 19th century. Because like then and now, its a busy market city at the intersection of roads leading south-west and south-east from the capital Manila to southern parts of the island Luzon and beyond.
