Zakopane, located in the extreme south of the country, at the foot of the hugely impressive Tatra Mountains, claims the title of the winter capital of Poland. It is in fact very attractive and has developed its own style in architecture - the Zakopianski.
Zakopane has fine examples of unique architecture and the Krupowki Street, which is the main avenue lined with traditional eateries and goralskie chaty serving beers and roasted lamb. Zakopane has a few fine accommodation options and is a perfect gateway for visiting the Tatrzanski National Park and the mountains. It can get really crowded in the winter and in the spring if the snow lasts, and the skiing facilities are not the best. It is also very popular in the summer as trekking and hiking overtake any other forms of activity.
The Tatra Mountains are called the mini Alps and trekking can be very dangerous. More people get lost and perish in the Tatras than in the Alps and any other mountains in Europe. [edit text][editors]
