The Ogrodzieniec Castle is the most impressive of all from the "Eagle's Nests" system built in 14th century to protect Polish-Czech border and a merchant track. Primarily a small fortress rebuilt in 16th c. by a rich banker from Cracov Seweryn Boner in Renaissance style. It was supposed to prove Boner's non-existant pedigree, he wanted it to look much older than it was; while you are there have a closer look at the tops of the towers (medieval) and lower parts of walls (gothic). Next owners - Firlej family - added "Kurza Stopa" (Chicken Foot) that defended the castle from SW and Beluard that enabled protecting of the entrance gate. In the middle of 17th c. it failed to defend against Swedish canons during "Swedish Deluge" as it was not modern enough. Reparied by Stanislaw Warszycki, the next owner, never came back to original beauty. Burned in 1702 by Swedish forces again, abandoned in 1810, then used as cheap source of stones and bricks...
