The Polish industrial town of Oswiecim, is about 50km west of Krakow (or a 1 ½ hour drive); it’s not very well known to the outside world, and to be fair, not even I visited it. They have a population of around 50,000 and they tend to live in high-rise buildings and houses built in the communist era. To my knowledge there are no major sights, famous musicians, writers or places of interest here.

However, the town was renamed to Auschwitz in the war days; and the main reason for visitors to go to the area is to see the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Tours can be arranged in Krakow; it is also fairly easy to get there on your own by taking a train from the main railway station. Admission is free. [edit text]  [editors]
