17th century Neptune Fountain in the Long Market stands as a symbol of Gdansk's bond with the sea, adding charm to this beautiful town market. A local legend has it that Neptune contributed to the development of the recipe for the famous Gdansk liquor, Goldwasser. Apparently indignant at seeing coins tossed into his fountain, Neptune struck the water with his trident crushing the gold into tiny flakes which since then have glittered in the delicious herbal liquor. The fountain was off today for maintenance.
