Estremoz is known as one of the three marble towns of Alto Alentejo, the others being Borba and Vila Vicosa. Marble was dirt cheap in the area, as was labour and therefore we find marble toilet buildings and rich looking staircases in very humble buildings.
The castle and Pousada are in a very interesting and picturesque area above the centre of the town and the town's ground plan recalls earlier times.
A major feature is the weekly Saturday market in the Rossio, a vast surfaced outdoor carpark. The market combines attributes of a car boot sale, a flea market and a produce market. There are about five adjacent stalls selling cheeses made from ewes' and goats' milk. [edit text][editors]
