Bragança is a city in the far north-east of Portugal, easily accessible several days of the week from Spanish Zamora but this necessitates an overnight stop.
Whereas the main street and particularly the museum are well worth seeing, the main attraction - and a sufficient one for making a point of going there - is the Cidadela, virtually a separate village on a hilltop but easily walkable, at least as far as time and distance are compared!
Here is an old castle of the Dukes of Bragança, Portugal's last royal family. However two things surpass it in interest. These are a pentagonal Romanesque council chamber, a rare survival of a lay building of the period in Europe, and a medieval pelorinho [preaching cross] rising from the back of a prehistoric sculpted pig.
