Curral das Freiras is reckoned to be one of the best positioned places on the whole island of Madeira. It is well up in the mountains with views to the very top of the island, htough for much of the time part of hte view is obscured by mist. Historically it's the place where nuns fled from Funchal to escape from an almost unbelievably major invasion by French pirates. At this time it was only accessible by a fairly long walk.
Now it's a bus ride of well under two hours from Funchal and a very long tunnel takes the road right to the village. It's accessible by bus on Saturdays and Sundays - despite the tunnels the bus trip on its own is sufficient reward for going - but you may have to choose between a very short stay or one that is excessively long except for hard walkers.
