Porto Moniz is in the far north-west of Madeira. It's possible to do a round trip with the Rodoeste bus company, going right round the south and west coasts and returning a few hours later by a stretch of the north coast and through the central mountains to Funchal. This is not a tourist trip as such but very constructive use of the service buses. [Check times at the Rodoeste stop in advance as the timetable you buy from the tourist office is not wholly reliable.] In spite of numerous tunnels which obviously must spoil many of the views once availabe, it's still a fabulous trip.
Porto Moniz itself is a small village with growing outskirts. There are rocks that the huge breaking waves particularly attractive and there are some largely naural swimming pools where the adult cost is only €1.40 [May 2007] There is an aquarium in an old fort.
Cildren [of all ages!] will enjoy sharing their picnic with the expectant lizards. [edit text][editors]
