The church
Ribeira Brava [Wild River] is on the south coast of Madeira some way west of Funchal, the island capital. Rodoeste buses to Porto Moniz have a ten minute stop there.
It's one of Madeira's better known and accessible resorts but at the moment, May 2007, it scarcely merits that. The 'wild river' is, sadly, no more than a boring trickle. Its deep banks, presumably built as a defence against floods, merely emphasise the scale of the current lack of rainfall on Madeira.
The church is impressive outside but some of the smaller coastal resorts further east are more immediately appealing. [edit text]  [editors]
