Castelo de Vide is a village accessible from Portalegre in the Alto Alentejo area of Portugal. It occupies two closely adjacent hill-tops in the Serra de Mamede. It was important as a place of settlement for Jews expelled from Spain, which is very near, in 1492. There is still a largely ruined synagogue. However the pride of the place, of course, is its castle, surrounded by the medieval quarter. This area is free to wander and completely unspoilt.
From the castle tower you can see other peaks and, in particular the even more splendid village of Marvão [qv.] From the other height you also get superb views back over the village to the castle. [edit text][editors]
