Paprika and Gulash

  18 votes
Now well incorporated into the EU and easily accessable from Vienna by train or forever increasing amount of flights, Budapest is a must for culturholics and those wanting to see and live history.

cargo up the Danube
cargo up the Danube
Set on the glorious Danube River, Budapest and hungarians have continuously produced most remarkable personalities in the art and scientific world; like List, Teller, (Calvin) Klein, Rubik and many other inventors. Must be the good food! The flat (Pest) east side of the river is where we stayed and dined, the hilly (Buda) west side has great monuments and scenery.

Favourite spots:
View from Gellert Hill
View from Gellert Hill
Gellert Hill Terraces and Castle Hill, accessable by cableway, offer a panorama over the city and view of the river Danube and nice walk in and around the church there. Coffee on the terrace helps one give a longer glance of the panorama and city below.

What's really great:
Chain Bridge
Chain Bridge
- going there with a hungarian friend and also seeing the different people of Budapest and how they live really close. I was a delightful two day compact course in culture, history and building-construction of Budapest.

Sights:
Monument

Buda Castle

Chain Bridge, well lit at night

Liberation Monument (liberation after WW2)

Parliament House

West Station, reminds me of the Orient Express

Statue Park, a collection of communist art once standing on the squares of Budapest

Hangouts:
Early morning kiosk

A suitable alternative are the wine houses and cellars (wine tasting)like Borhaz, Demijohn (great) and Magyar Borak.

The Deer House ("Szarvashas") is a famous old style hungarian inn.

In the suburbs, make-shift kiosks offer food and drinks through the night

Restaurants:
No problem! Get addicted to paprika and gulash (really a soup here). Also countless international restaurants, follow the eyes and nose!

Other recommendations:
The motor racing track Ungaring hosts Formula-One races yearly...
