My first and only all-inclusive package deal, I otherwise make my own travel arrangements. I needed a one week break from work and got a wonderfull new adventure, new experiences and friends.
Approaching Agir over olive tree plantations
Tunesia once a french colony became a western nation and link between the Arab/African world and europe. Always an important trading link for caravans of goods from the Sahara, the romans occupied it and made it an outpost for the southern Mediteranean seas. Inland, the biggest oasises like Tozeur are the cities of the desert. Djerba, 450km SW of Tunis, is an island in the Gulf of Gabes, capital Houmt Souk. Access is by a causeway or Ferry. The islands beaches are entirely clamed by large hotels and resorts or private property. A very mixed population of arabs, christians and jews live in harmony. A synagoge was attacked in 2002 though by outside fundamentalists.
Favourite spots:
Romantic beach
Both pool and the beach naturally. Walks around the nearby island towns are organised by the hotel, better to get to know people, both inhabitants and other tourists and enjoy sundowners together.
What's really great:
Stop on the salt lake
The hotels also offer 2-3 day adventure tours into the desert. The 4x4 tour to Tozeur, Douz and Chenini was exactly what I needed.
Sights:
Freedom, no phones!
(into the desert)
- Tozeur Oassis
- the salt pan
- Douz (camel rides)
- Chenini (cave living people)
- Toujane (mud houses)
Trivia: The area was a setting for the filming of the "Star Wars" desert scenes.
Accommodations:
Sailing, windsufing, tennis and much more
Club-Med all inclusive packet: flight, accommodation in comfortable chalets and all meals and intertainment. 7-days around $400 (from Europe) Off season is best, uncrowded and cheaper. Weather is not dependant of season, Tunisia enjoys 12-months of summer!
The resort offers a vast range of sports and fitness opportunities. Massage needed well deserved.
