Sun and surf at Surfers Paradise.

  17 votes
My 31st birthday rolled around and to cheer myself up, I organised a trip to Surfers Paradise with two girlfriends. It was a chance to top up the tan before winter, and act like a five year old before I felt old.

Sun. sea and sand.
Surfers was more than I expected it to be. The sun and sea were warmer, and there was so much more to do than lie around on the beach. We would wake up early every morning and walk down to the main part of Surfers for a cup of excellent coffee. It was about half an hour each way, but the view along the beach was always fantastic. After breakfast there was a lot of decision making to do. How do you choose between all the parks and activities around? Then when night time came around we would once again be forced to choose from a multitude of restaurants, bars and clubs.

Favourite spots:
I would have to pick Wet and Wild Water World as my favourite spot. We spent an entire day running around splashing in the pools and sliding down the rides, generally acting like little kids. And at $AUS40 entry that included all the rides, what more could you ask for?

What's really great:
The fact that there are so many activities to choose from in and around Surfers makes it a fantastic place for anyone.
In Surfers itself there are surfing lessons, scooters to hire, the amphibian duck mobile thingy, waterskiing and plenty more. A short bus ride away takes you to all the main parks in the area, the water park, seaworld, movie world, etc. Each one a full day of activity.

Accommodations:

We stayed at a friend's parent's apartment in Main Beach. It had an amazing view of the sea and the broad water next to it. Great sunsets and sunrises.
We stayed one night at Paradise Backpackers, which is centrally located, but away from the beach. Still, it was clean and cheap. The backpackers also have agreements with a lot of the parks and other activities around so you get good discounts.

Nightlife:
We went out big on the Sunday night, the place was rocking.
We started out at Fisherman's Wharf, and after a few gins and dancing to the live coverband, we went back to Surfers and a place called Melbas. They have a club downstairs and a more sedate pool bar upstairs, once again there was something for everyone.

Restaurants:
I recommend the Surf Lifesaving Clubs for cheap meals, they're dotted around in several plaaces around Surfers. They serve pertty standard fare, but the beer prices more than make up for it.

Other recommendations:
I took a surfing lesson with the Cheyne Horan suf school. It was teh first time I had ever been on a surfboard and it was great. they guarantee that you will stand up in your first lesson, and the next one is free if you don't. My instructor was fantastically patient and a damn good surfer.
