Member opinion: San Francisco is the first and last city in the world to operate cable car.Cable Cars began operation on August 2, 1873,and immediatly made an impact on the development of the city by opening previously inaccessible hiltop areas to residential use.By 1906,some 600 cars traveled the 110-mile route.After the advent of buses and private autos,the lines were reduced to a 12-mile network,used by only 44 cars.
