So much more than the Sound of Music!

Salzburg is by far my favourite city. It has so much to offer everyone, no matter what you have a taste for. Depending on where you are from, the city is either most famous for being the birthplace of Mozart, or the setting for the Sound of Music.

Where to begin? I began at the Mozart Wohnhaus, where he lived for many years with his family. It now houses a museum, which is well worth a visit. There is also Mozart's birthplace, although this tends to attract more visitors and is therefore a bit more crowded. His birthplace is located in Getreidegasse, which is worth walking down anyway. It is very quaint and old timely. The cathedral is also a must-see (built by Irish saint Virgil!). Entrance is free and it is truly breathtaking inside and out. The museum of modern art may not suit everyone's taste but you should definitely go up just to take a look at the view from up there. Although it's a cliche, I did the Sound of Music tour (pricey but worth it). I think this is a must for anyone who fell in love with the movie. I certainly got very excited seeing locations familiar to me from the film.

Favourite spots:
Mirabell Gardens - there was a choir singing songs from the Sound of Music while I was walking here; I'll never forget walking through the gardens as this is when I got a text message telling me my nephew Connor had just been born - I bought him a little teddy wearing Lederhosen in a souvenier shop nearby), Getreidegasse- nice shops, great atmosphere, Leopoldskron - it rained while i was here but nice to walk around the lake, St. Leonhard - the most beautiful little village I've ever been to!

What's really great:
Untersberg - view from my room
Untersberg - view from my room
Hard to say because it was all so good - probably the small village I stayed in just outside the city called St. Leonhard - right at the foot of the Untersberg mountain - the view from my room was breathtaking

Sights:
Mirabell Gardens, Leopoldskron, Untersburg Mountain, Mozart's birthplace and Wohnhaus, Museum of Modern Art, Cathedral, Getreidegasse

Accommodations:
Simmerl Inn 3* - this is where I stayed, it looks like a typical Austrian guesthouse - the staff were very friendly, the room itself was newly refurbished and very spacious, especially considering I was on my own - I paid €34 per night in mid July so it really was great value - the only disadvantage may be its location - although the village of St. Leonhard is truly gorgeous, it is about a 20-25 minute bus ride into Salzburg itself but the buses go every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes at the weekend.
Sallerhof 3* - is also owned by the same people. Again, it's not directly in Salzburg although it's closer than Simmerl Inn. The two properties are very similar though - in terms of both price and atmosphere.

Nightlife:
I don't go clubbing alone......

Hangouts:
see above.........

Restaurants:
The restaruant in the Untersberg Hotel (4*) in St. Leonhard was very homely and the food was great while not being too pricey. There was a wide menu to choose from - from traditional Austrian cuisine to pizza. Average main course cost about €8-10.
Hotel Sacher - they serve the world famous Sacher Torte here and it is well worth visiting for afternoon tea and cake.

Other recommendations:
The cable car to the top of Untersberg although I didn't have enough time to do this, I definitely think I will next time I visit
