The Open Air Museum is Cappadocia's most famous attraction and a World Heritage Site since 1984. It is a complex of frescoed rock cut cave churches dating from the 4th C with the wall paintings largely from the 9-12C as well as a convent and a dining hall. The several churches are set into a spectacular landscape and connected by a cobbled walkway, each with entry of variable difficulty. During the Middle Ages, Christians had to hide their churches to avoid persecution and the original entrances were carefully hidden. Today, rockslides and erosions have washed away the exterior walls allowing easier access.
