information about turkey  IstanbulTurkey, Istanbul
Considered the most important mosaic in the Hagia Sophia, dating to 1261 and with water damage, celebrates the end of Roman Catholic rule imposed by the Fourth Crusade and a return to Orthodox faith. It is believed to be an early example of Renaissance style in Byzantine art with softer facial features and softer colors. John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary are believed to be praying for the salvation of humaniity on Judgement Day, facing Christ in less than full profile.
