To surf: Puerto Viejo (Limon)...lots of options on where to stay...for camping I recommend Rocking J's cheap, right on the beach and nearer to cokles point (best place to surf in Puerto Viejo) than other places in the center of the town.

Puerto Viejo has great night life and its a great place to experience the cultural difference between the pacific and caribbean of the country. Other things to do in the area very close for day trips... Cahuita and Manzanillo (national parks and wildlife reserves) and Bribri Indigenous Reservation.

Santa Teresa/Mal pais...(Guanacaste) free camping on the beach! Many people camp on a tree covered area of the beach so it is very safe...everyone looks out for eachother!

places to avoid depends on your travel style... as a costarican I try to avoid overcrowed, overly exploited...thus expensive, and too touristy areas such as Jaco, Manuel Antonio, Flamingo, Tamarindo... as I say it depends on what you want to experience this may be what you are looking for... but there are many places even more beautiful, less crowded and cheaper.

cool places to visit Corcovado, Volcan Arenal, Tortuguero, Ostional.

hi, im going to be going to costa rica in the end of june and im staying to do some voluntere work in Boruca for 2 months, I finish the 20th of august and then i want to go for a week surfing costa rica beaches, Im going alone and im not great at surfing, so I rather go with someone or hang around surf camps. If anyone is going to be in costa rica around this time and wants to come surfing with me for a week it would be great. or if not could anyone recomend me anything
