Cordoba is a terrific city. Not only does it contain one of the two best Moorish buildings in Spain. It also has a Roman bridge, alongside Arab mills, picturesquely spanning the Guadalquivir, the Alcazar of the Christian Kings, an outstanding archaeological museum and a beautiful palace with numerous patios. The old winding narrow streets of the Judería are immensely atmospheric and the Synagogue, albeit small and largely ruined, is the only one in Spain outside of Toledo. In addition there is easy accesss [11.00 bus] to the archaeological site of Medina Azahara, once a city built on monumental scale to impress visitors of the Sultan’s power and status.
The superlative Moorish building mentioned above is the Mezquita [Mosque]. Sadly some monarch found it necessary to build a Christian Cathedral inside it but there are still numerous highly decorated old arches still in situ. You’ll always find something extra and feel the shock of architectural perfection as you enter. [edit text][editors]
